When planting, prepare a hole 18 to 24 inches deep, filling it with good loam soil. Plant the Clematis with the crown 1-inch below the surface. Firm the soil gently. Water the plant in with a soluble fertilizer like Plant Products 15-30-15. Mulching the root area during summer to retain moisture and keep soil cool is beneficial. Prune all varieties 6 to 12 inches above ground after planting the first year in early spring. Yearly moderate pruning should be done in March or early April before the new growth starts. Prune out dead wood, being careful not to damage live wood. |
